It's been awhile since we've posted one of your questions but I hope that we can be more consistant and get through some of your great questions over the next few months.
This week's question is "Could Jesus have gotten married?" This is a good question and it's easy to answer in some ways, and really difficult in other ways.
The simple answer is... yes. Jesus was fully human at the same time he was fully God. (now that's not easy to understand!) Jesus was human in every way and the Bible says he experienced all the joys, pain and temptations that everyone experinces. Marriage was considered a very beautiful and teasured thing in Jesus' day. In fact when someone was married in Jesus' culture they celebrated for at least 7 days with everyone in the town.
I'm sure that Jesus had friendships with grils in his community and I'm sure the idea of marriage would have been as attractive to Jesus as anyone else. So a second question could come up... "Was Jesus ever married?"
Jesus' birth and life was built around a single purpose. To demonstrate God's love through the sacrifice of his life. (John 3:16). His purpose was not to settle down, get a job, find a wife, have a family, and live happily ever after. (I'm sure it must have been a tempting thought at times). Jesus said himself, "I did not come to be served, but to serve by giving my life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45). Marriage and a family would have created obligations, commitments and some amazing complications that Jesus wasn't here for.
It would be an interesting question to ask Jesus himself, and I'm sure he would enjoy explaining it all. But for now, all you've got is my best thoughts about it. What about you? What are your thoughts about it? I'd like to hear what you think.
